TMD (Jaw Joint Problems)
TMD refers to Tempro Mandibular Disorder, sometimes referred to as TMJ, Tempro Mandibular Joint. TMD refers to a number of problems related to the jaw joint, its musculature, and related structures. TMJ refers to the hinge joint itself.
TMD problems can be extremely painful and cause normal function to be difficult or impossible.
Symptoms commonly observed include: Clicking or popping in jaw joint. Mild to severe facial pain. Headaches. Difficulty chewing. "Locked" jaw. Change in bite. Patients most often experience chronic, episodic symptoms that interfere with sleep, eating, and normal functioning. Some patient's lapse into an acute phase that is very alarming and required immediate treatment.
The cause of TMD problems is often difficult to determine. We commonly find some of the following events related to our patient's episodes: Facial injury. Missing teeth and bad biting relationships between jaws. Chronic clenching or grinding (bruxism). Heredity is now being talked about as a possible major factor.
Treatment of TMD is often multifaceted. Proper diagnosis is essential. Dr. Taylor would be happy to help you with your problem and to discuss it at length.
